Why it is wrong for Muslims to follow the Tabligh?

I have been studying the Tabligh Jama'at since 1988.

Back in Penang, these Tabligh 'Qarquns' @ followers will congregate at the Masjid Benggali in Georgetown especially every Thursday evenings.

They gather there in large numbers coming from all over the island and from the Province Wellesley, Kedah, Perlis, Perak, all other states in the peninsular, Sabah Sarawak and even from other countries of the world for congregational prayers!

After the 'Bayan' @ Sermon by the Amir Sahab @ Leader, they will be asked to give their names to join a 3 days, 40 days or 4 months 'dakwah walkabout' in small groups to places designated by the Majlis @ the Tabligh Board of Amirs as their 'going in the way of Allah'!

Even back then, I knew that there was something wrong about the way these chaps used to be going about their ways.

I saw people just following blindly the Tabligh's ways without really knowing the basics of the faith, without learning the Fardhu Ain, without knowing the proper ways of Islam but just putting up a front of looking religious and acting religious!

Wayward youths and drug addicts or alcoholics were roped in by these groups and asked to follow them in going from surau to surau, mosque to mosque in the notion of going on a religious journey.

Persons who don't know zilch about the faith of Islam start to grow wispy beards, put on a skull cap or any sort of headwear especially the ones sewn from scrap cloth and fashioned from the styles of those from the Indian subcontinent, or the type worn by the Afghanis.

They would start sporting a jubah, start learning how to wrap a 'serban' @ turban and start learning to polish their teeth using a 'miswak' @ toothstick!

All these while, these Tabligh 'Qarquns' would be in the impression that they are performing 'dakwah' @ Islamic Propagation and will just be going along with the 'Amir' @ Leader appointed , and start going from door to door of the Muslims of the localities that they have chosen to 'ziarah' @ visit!

Now, you should see how preposterous it would be for these 'Muslim' version of the Christian Jehowah's Witnesses or Biblethumpers, going around knocking on the doors of the Muslim residents to ask the residents to join them in the prayers at the residents own suraus @ small prayer centres or the residents own mosques!

At times , these Tablighis would go knocking on the door of the local Imam @ Prayer Leader of the very surau or mosque that they @ the Tablighis are visiting! Asking the Imam to join them in prayer!!!:D

Really outrageous when such a thing happens!!!

It's like a classic tale of trying to teach the old duck how to swim!!!

Such are the Tablighis! Deviant , cowardly , unbelievably stubborn and they refuse to listen to reason for they have been indoctrinated in such a way by their Amirs to not mix with anyone who doesn't follow them in their deviant ways!

“Jamaa’at al-Tableegh” is one of the groups that are claiming to be working for Islam.

Their efforts in calling people to Allah (da’awah) cannot be denied. But like many other groups they do make some mistakes, and some points should be noted concerning them.

These points may be summed up as follows, noting that these mistakes may vary within this group, depending on the environment and society in which they find themselves.

In societies in which knowledge and scholars are prevalent and the mazhab of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah is widespread, the mistakes are much less; in other societies these mistakes may be greater.

Some of their mistakes are :

1 – Not adopting the ‘aqeedah of Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jamaa'ah. This is clearly seen from the variations in the ‘aqeedah of some of their members and even of some of their leaders.

2 – Their not paying attention to knowledge of the Syariah. I have opened my doors many a times to bumbling 'Qarquns' who can't make sense of their bumbling speech in trying to ask me to join them in 'worrying' about Islam!
Sometimes, I'd turn the tables on my visitors and end up 'preaching' to the 'greenies' :P Can't help myself at times :D

3 – Their misinterpretation of some Qur’aanic verses in a manner that was not intended by Allah.

For example they interpret the verses on jihad as referring to “going out for da’wah”. The verses which mentioned the word khurooj (going out) etc. are interpreted by them as meaning going out for da’wah.

4 – They make their system of going out for da’wah an act of worship. So they started to misquote the Qur’aan to support their system which specifies certain numbers of days and months.

This system, which they think is based on evidence from Qur’aan, is widespread among them in all countries and environments.

5 – They do some things that go against shari’ah, such as appointing one of them to make do’a for them whilst the group goes out for dakwah and they think that their success or failure depends on whether or not this man was sincere and his prayer accepted.

6 – Da’eef (weak) and mawdoo’ (fabricated) hadeeth are widespread among them, and this is not befitting for those who aim to call people to Allaah.

7 – They do not speak of mungkar (evil things), thinking that enjoining what is good is sufficient. Hence we find that they do not speak about evils that are widespread among the people, even though the slogan of this ummah – which they continually repeat – is :

“Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Maa‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Mungkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful”
(Al Qur'an Surah Al ‘Imraan Chapter 3 :Verse 104 – interpretation of the meanings)

The successful are those who enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, not just those who do only one of the two.

8 – Some of them fall into self-admiration and arrogance, which leads them to look down on others, and even to look down on the scholars and describe them as inactive and sleeping, or to show off. So you find them talking about how they went out and travelled, and they saw such and such, which leads to unfavourable results, as we have mentioned.

9 – They regard going out for daa’wah as better than many acts of worship such as jihad and seeking knowledge, even though those things are obligatory duties, or may be obligatory for some people but not others.

10 – Some of them audaciously issue fatwas, and discuss tafseer and hadeeth.

That is because they allow each one of them to address the people and explain to them.

This leads to them speak audaciously on matters of sharee’ah. So they inevitably speak of the meaning of a ruling, hadeeth or verse when they have not read anything about it, or listened to any of the scholars.

And some of them are new Muslims or have only recently come back to Islam.

11- Some of them are negligent with regard to the rights of their children and wives. Some of them join the Tabligh movement as a form of escapism!

They go on these 'dakwah trips' to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (the IPB countries) leaving their wives and children sometimes without any protection or funds to support the wife pay the bills , buy food for the family and other needs.

Just imagine the scenario where you have the 'holy moly' husband going away to 'preach' to others in faraway countries yet leaving their families exposed to dangers from all kinds of fitnah and the society at large!

We all are familiar with what type of society is prevalent today. Adultery, waywardness, immoral activities can all take place when the husband or the father figure is not at home!

Hence the scholars do not allow people to go out with them, except for those learned persons who want to help guide them and correct the mistakes that the Tablighis have fallen into.

We should not keep the people away from them altogether, rather we must try to correct their mistakes and advise them so that their efforts will continue and they will be correct according to the Qur’aan and Sunnah.

It's not easy! I know. I have tried many a times to try and make the young and even old Tabligh Qarquns see the deviant ways that they are blindly following but it's like talking to the wall!

Here are the Fatwa's @ religious decrees of some of the respected Islamic Scholars concerning the wayward Jamaa’at al-Tableegh:

1 – Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz said :

"Jamaa’at al-Tableegh do not have proper understanding of the issues of ‘aqeedah, so it is not permissible to go out with them, except for one who has knowledge and understanding of the correct ‘aqeedah of Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jamaa'ah, so that he can guide them and advise them, and cooperate with them in doing good, because they are very active, but they need more knowledge and someone who can guide them of those who have knowledge of Tawheed and the Sunnah. May Allaah bless us all with proper understanding of Islam and make us steadfast in adhering to it".

Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 8/331

2 – Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan said :

"Going out for the sake of Allah does not refer to the kind of going out that they mean nowadays. Going out for the sake of Allah means going out to fight. What they call going out nowadays is a bid’aah (innovation) that was not narrated from the salaf.

Going out to call people to Allah cannot be limited to a certain number of days, rather one should call people to Allah according to one's abilities, without limiting that to a group or to forty days or more or less than that.

Similarly the daa’iyah @ the Caller to Islam must have knowledge. It is not permissible for a person to call people to Allah when he is ignorant.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) :

“Say (O Muhammad): This is my way; I invite unto Allah (i.e. to the Oneness of Allah — Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge”
( Al Qur'an Surah Yusuf Chapter 12: Verse 108)

In example : "with knowledge" because the Caller must know that to which he calls people, what is obligatory, enjoined , forbidden and not encouraged!.

He has to know what shirk, sin, kufr, immorality and disobedience are; he has to know the degrees of denouncing evil and how to do it.

The kind of going out that distracts people from seeking knowledge is wrong, because seeking knowledge is an obligation, and it can only be achieved by learning, not by inspiration.

This is one of the misguided Sufi myths, because action without knowledge is misguidance, and hoping to acquire knowledge without learning is an illusion.

Dear MG58,

I loved reading your other posts. Subhanallah, it enlightened most of my views and i seriously regarded you as being unbiased when you write.

I think the post that you write about the tabligh jamaat is biased due to a small involvement you had with the jamaah and in addition to some info you had gotten from someplace else.

I am involved with the group and most of what you said is false, but very commonly heard, being uttered by those who have no knowledge of the work, entirely relying on their 'short' involvement with the jamaah and prejudice they held due to words of motuh they heard from other people (who is no different from you yourself).

Since i admire your other writing greatly, i dismissed this as one of your 'mistake' in judgement due to insufficient information.

And please, do seek for more information before we judge any other work done for the advancement of Islam and its ummah. It is really SAD hearing this coming from another good and practising Muslim like you.

Take care my dear brother in Islam. May Allah guide us to the right path, amin.

Assalamualaikum dear Brother & Sister,

I for one do not dismiss them off rightaway as useless deviants!

I believe that there is still hope for the Jamaat Tabligh to put their actions right and stop committing the bida'ah of attributing false hadiths to Rasul SAW!

The Fatwa against the Tabligh Movement is by the Scholars of Islam and not by me. I am just a speck of dust , a mureed, forever will be.

My observations are based on my personal experiences with them nothing more!

As this is my space to express my views, there i have done so for the sake of Allah SWT!

Verily, Allah, God Almighty knows that I speak with no hidden malice.

The Tablighis do not stop maksiat before their eyes and avoid mixing with the general Ummah. This is haqiqat and I stand by my words!

I leave it to Allah SWT to guide us all! Ameen.

My dear Brother,

I was a reluctant member of the Jamaat 10 years ago. I had as many doubts as you do now or even more.

But Today, I feel that this work is very very important for the UMMAT.

I am very sure that most people in this work now feel the same and they all had the same doubts before.

The work of the Jamat is only to inculcate values and practices of the deen.

The Six elements that the jamat teaches are

1. KALIMA -
2. SALAT - PRAYER
3. ILM AND DHIKR - KNOWLEDGE AND REMEMBRANCE
4. IKRAM - SERVICE BEFORE SELF
5. IKHLAS - SINCERETY IN INTENTION - ie to do all the deeni work to earn Allah's Pleasure alone.
6. DEVOTING TIME FOR THE DEEN.

You can hardly fault any of this.

- GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT-

Assalamualaikum Faisal,

I have answered above as to why I am not totally exuberant when commenting on the Jamaat Tabligh.

Read my post in depth and understand that I do not dismiss them off altogether.

The intentions might be noble but if there is no adherence to the requirements of 'Amal Ma'aruf Nahi Mungkar' by the Tablighis, then their case is alike the fisherman with a torn net.

They need to return to the fundamentals of the faith and do not pollute the practices of Islam with 'Bida'ah Lawwamah' practices by innovating newfound ideals and ideas as to how to go out in the Way of Allah.

Read again one by one my points above and countercheck to see if what I say and what they do is as their current practices?

The Tabligh might mean well but the way they go about Dakwah al Islamiah is biased, cowardly and full of khurafat as pointed out by the Ulamak Al Muktabar of Islam.

This is my personal blog and I state herewith exactly as what I feel about them.

Hope that you can be perceptive of that and accept that this is what I think.

Wabillahi taufeek walhidayah.

Wassalamualaikum.

Assalaamu 'Alaikum Wa Rahmathullahi Wa Barakaathuhu,

I'm writing from Dubai, UAE,
and I would like to say that all the people who replied to the concerned brother's blog Tablighis who do the same stuff mentioned above & also they are taught by their leaders (before teaching anything related to Deen)to stand by whatever nonsense they do, so religiously, that even if Jibreel (Alaihissalaam) came down with a 'WAHI' saying they were wrong, they would say to him "Look Jibreel, we don't care where you come from, we gotta do what we gotta do". You won't believe me when I'm writing this but right from the 1st word till the very last of this whole session feel s like a recap of what I went thro'. The brother has very rightly mentioned what goes on in this group & I went thro' the same exact experiences. The whole episode not leaving a single word is my exact experience. That much of similarity is not a coincidence. Its time to mend ways before somebody decides to kick you out of the Masjids for falsifying & faking Islam & misleading innocent unawares. PS - that's btw a huge & unforgivable crime not only on this earth but is the sight of Allah also. For Allah's sake & for our beloved RasoolUllah's sake (about who's suffering & toiling for the sake of establishing Islam on this earth we all ahould be knowing thouroughly) don't end up being the loser & lost sheep bith here & in the hereafter after so much hard work. Concerned Muslims will tell u this today since we would not like our brothers to go astray. But there will come a time when nobody will bother about you & then nobody will be there to guide you. Beware of that time & invite people to righteousness not falsehood. Btw a scholar of Islam said rightly that Da'wah is not for Muslims since they already have the Kalima, Muslims need Tarbiyah & Naseehah which only Aalims & Muftis can give. Invite then to that & you'll end up saving Islam from going back to Jahiliyyah in the long run. Give Da'wah to non-Muslims & you'll find yourself learning the real Deen since they are the ones who'll ask you the real questions for which you can give only answers based on Qurán & Sahih Hadeeth for which you'll need to aquire Ilm for which you'll need to go to a Áalim. That's where you start. Insha Allah, may Allah guide you misguided souls. Jazaak Allah to the brother of the original blog.

Assalamualaikum:

I read your post on Tabligh Jamaat. I could only say from your post that you have too much bias about tabligh. I would suggest you to go in Tabligh for at least 40 days. Do you think lakhs of people sacrificing their time and money are not wise people. We muslims have become mostly armchair critics. We know how to criticize, but can't even appreciate the good work being done by others. So many alcoholics and drug addicts lives have changed. Do you think its a deviant thing to do. So many people have become namaazi. Do you think it is a deviant thing to do. So many people mashallah are trying to understand what Imaan should be. Everything is being taught on line of Shariat. May Allah open all of our mind and have mercy on us.

Wa'alaikumsalam brother rafat,

If there is one thing I have come to understand is that Muslims are among the most recalcitrant people on earth when we try to give them nasihah!

Tablighis may mean well but their methodology is a bit skewed and they run away from 'amar makruf nahi mungkar'.

That's my main context of my blogging.

I do not have to go around for 40 days or 4 months to do my dakwah.

My dakwah activities are on 24hours seven days a week, all through the rest of my remaining life!

You can just go do as you please bro since what I have written above and shared with my readers the Fatwa of the honorable Syaikhs of Islam does not seem to penetrate your obviously cemented mindset!

Just do as you please bro. I have my ways and you yours.

Even in a thousand years, the Tablighis obstinate blinkered minds won't see the gist of what I am saying!

Thanks for commenting but please understand that we have our own ways in reaching Allah's Redha.

All the best in your efforts.

Wallahu Alam bissawab.

Assalamualaikum

brother Mahaguru i think you have understood Tabligh wrong. I myself also had doubts and was very sceptical of it from my early experiences but have learned not to judge tabligh on face value of a few people within it.

1) tabligh is a 24 hour a day effort the 4 month, 40 day 3 day expeditions are organised so as to perform dawah in different localities. Furthermore to be in an environment of the masjid and away from the fitnah of the world, this automatically increases yor awareness of Allah and concept of right and wrong.

2)Tablighi's perform dawah at their local mosques and locality when they are not in the path of Allah (SWT). ie therefore is a continual effort.

3) Also tabligh does not encourage people to preach to non-muslims whilst in the path of Allah when going door to door because it obviously inpractical to go to a non-muslims door and bombard him with islam.SO they encourage that every person should make effort on the non muslims around them at work, school or university etc.

4) The view point or belief of some people maybe wrong in tabligh but Scholars of tablighi origin have the correct aqeedah and can justify thier cause.

5)Tabligh is basically a type of mobile madressah where you reinforce or recapture your imaan and learn how to assist others to do the same. Its not a group or anything of the sort. We have people from varying madhab's (ie maliky, shafi, hanafi, hunbalie.. i have even met a Salafi's in this effort). It basically allows you to learn how to change your habits and bring a desire to performing amals.

6)Tabligh does not discourage fighting as jihad it just emphasises the importance of building imaan and yakeen before you go out to fight. Today people train for their physical abilities before they go out in the path and many can't survive the conditions and tend to return home ASAP, this is due to a weakness in imaan, which should also be built up and strengthened.

7)Some tablighi's who may be traditionalist scape goat it to get away from home and give it a bad name, but the true essence of tabligh is excellent providing you join it with Ikhlas rather than a way to get away from the family (which defeats the object of sacrifice ie leaving your family for the sake of Allah)

8) Tabloigh unites hearts and brings about true brotherhood, you often find brothers who have a great sense of Ikram and they build ties only for the sake of Allah. On odd accaisions you do meet people who are not genuine but this you will find every where and in such case these people are often not in the effort for the sake of Allah.

These are just some things i wanted to make clear to everyone because i feel if it wasn't for tabligh many people would be astray tabligh has revived islam in so many parts of the world aswell as introducing thousend of mosques to spiritually dead areas. Subhanallah what a blessing tabligh is. May Allah bless us all with the true understanding of this effort. Ameen
