Valentine's Day - It's absurdity and reasons why true Muslims are forbidden to join the Kuffars in such a pointless one day celebration?

Assalamualaikum Ya Ikhwanul Muslimin na wal Muslimat.

May you all be in the best of Iman, Health and Safe from Harm. Ameen.

My topic for today is about the practicing of innovative cultures from the Kuffars amongst our ignorant young and old Muslims due to their lack of knowledge about such matters.

There are many amongst this nation's ignorant ones especially amongst the Malaysian Muslims who swallow hook, line and sinker whatever comes out of the Western cultures without investigating as to why whatever celebrations came to be in the first place?

Take the oncoming St.Valentine's Day which falls on the 14th of February.

How many of the clueless young Muslims of this country know the reasons why such a celebration came to be?

Do they know as to whether it is halal or haram to partake in such celebrations and the implications that might arise from their foolishly aping the Kuffar's in such a charade?

I will share with you as to what our Islamic Scholars have to say about this?

Firstly, we have :

Fatwa: Muslims Celebrating Valentine's Day

Contemporary Fatwa

Question:

Respected scholars, as-salamu `alaykum.

What do you say to Muslims who celebrated Valentine's Day?

Have they committed a sin? What is Islam's stance on celebrating Valentine's Day?

Jazakum Allahu khayran.

Answer:

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Brother, we really appreciate your forwarding this question to us, and we commend your keenness on getting yourself well-acquainted with the teachings of Islam.

May Allah help us all keep firm on the Right Path, Amen!

As Muslims, we are required to love one another and to wish and inculcate love among people regardless of their color, race, religion, or identity.

However, this does not mean dissolving our identity or blindly copying and imitating others' traditions and practices.

Islam goes against celebrating Valentine's Day because commemorating that day is an innovation or bida`ah that has no religious backing, let alone the unlawful practices done during it that Muslims should not take part in.

In her response to your question, the Muslim scholar and Da`iyah Zienab Mostafa states the following:

Thank you for this important question.

It is unfortunate that many Muslims tend to copy and imitate others without understanding the backgrounds. Muslims must not dissolve the marked features of their identity.

Muslims are only allowed to celebrate `Eid Al-Fitr and `Eid Al-Adha.

Adding other days to the importance of `Eid is completely unacceptable and a blind imitation to un-Islamic traditions.

We are cautioned against blindly following others.

We should copy people in doing what is good and right, without compromising our faith.

We should feel proud of our Islamic way of life.

In another reply to a similar question, the scholars had these to share :

Muslims who celebrate Valentine Day are not aware of their religion and follow the footsteps of disbelievers.

We would like to bring to the attention of all Muslims the origin of this celebration so everyone can easily see the ruling of Shariah concerning the celebration of Valentine Day.

The Romans had a festival named Lupercalia and they used to celebrate it on the 15th February every year.

On that day they offered sacrifices to their supposed god named "Lurks" to protect their cattle and the like from being killed by wolves. They celebrated this festival during the spring holidays according to their calculations.

During the thirteenth century the day of this festival was changed to February 14th.

There was an incident that led to this change in the day for this celebration.

In the thirteenth century a Roman Emperor Claudius II, forbade his soldiers to marry because marriage would involve them in family life and cause them to lose interest in fighting.

A Catholic priest named Valentine revolted against this emperor's order and performed weddings for the soldiers secretly.

After a while his disobedience was discovered and he was imprisoned.

While in prison he fell in love with the jailer's daughter.

On February the 14th, he was executed.

After his death people believed that he had sacrificed himself for the sake of Christianity and to save lovers. Subsequently the Church elevated him to Sainthood and February 14th came to be observed as Saint Valentine's Day.

In this day young girls and boys send love letters, love cards, gifts, etc. to each other.

They are celebrating this day by engaging in such practices.

Based on the above details we conclude that celebrating this day and any other holiday of non Muslims is forbidden in Islam.

Does the above fatwa's stop Malaysian young and clueless adult Muslims?

No sirree!

The jahiliyyah's amongst us will throng the restaurants and cafes on February the 14th. They will dress up and order flowers and chocolates for their yet to be wedded sweethearts or intended victims.

Uh huh!

Many an ignorant girl or young woman will end up being sacrificed on that evening.

You know how it goes?

First these wolves will take them young sheep on a romantic evening out. Woo them with bouquets, this and that.

Then most of them will end up crossing the line between halal and haram.

At the end of the day, there might be lots of 'Oops! Sorry!..and so on.

Will our jahiliyyahs ever learn?

No sir.

Case of 'semangat muda' and all that crap.

Valentine's Day is a Kuffar's celebration. As usual most of such celebrations have no solid basis and usually are concocted by hearsay and commercial interests by the traders concerned.

Florists, restaurateurs, jewelers, hoteliers, chocolate sellers and all who stand to gain on that one night are already busy with preparations to rake in the ringgits come 14th February whilst many of the wolves in heat are gonna be busy making plans to explore the possibilities of making their conquests of the clueless be smitten fair damsels of Bolehland.

This victimization has no boundaries. It transcends race and religion nowadays because our nation is just like a bloody sponge. It absorbs just whatever foreign culture or trend without question.

Nobody gives a damn anymore in real life and when calamity strikes anyone, it's 'sendirian berhad' maa?

Yup!

All you fathers and mothers out there. Watch out! Watch and mind your sons and daughters.

Remember what Rasul Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam forewarned us about?

That if we are not careful, we will follow the Kuffars in everything that they do?

I am not saying that we are forbidden in following the good ways that is also there in Western cultures but to refrain from following them in ways that might lead to the destruction of our ummah's good moral values such as the free mixing and maksiat that is part and parcel of the Kuffar originated celebration such as this Valentine's Day!

May Allah bless and guide us all!

Ameen.

Before I leave for the masjid, I would like to share with you a good lecture by Syeikh Abdur Raheem Greene.

Have a blessed Juma'at. Insya Allah.
