Hookah....Harmless fun or Harmful Sin?? by Asma bint Shameem

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

I received this email from an online group where this author has published an article which I find quite interesting and I believe it to be beneficial to us.

Hope it opens up our minds to the dangers of indulging in smoking the Hookah!

* I have added the appropriate Quranic verses to further enhance the article where it is relevant and corrected some minor grammatical errors where it appeared with no alteration to the context of the following article.

*********************************************************************

In the name of Allah, the Most-Merciful, the All-Compassionate.
"May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon You"

Praise be to Allah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah

'Hookah....Harmless fun or Harmful Sin?' by Asma bint Shameem.

Its evil has spread amongst us like wild fire.

From the West to the East, it is a slow poison that has permeated the societies, even among the Muslims.

In fact, it crept upon us so subtly that no one really thinks its bad. And it has blinded individuals who partake in this new fad to believe that it isn't harmful.

What is this evil, this menace, this new fad that I am talking about?

It is the evil of smoking Hookah.....also called sheesha, nargeela, argila, ghalyan, as well as hubbly-bubbly.

Nowadays, hookah bars and cafes have popped up everywhere, fueled by the growing popularity of hookah smoking among teens and young adults.

It is a normal, everyday thing in some parts of the Middle East, when father and son, brother and uncle, all go out to smoke hookah while the ladies stay home. No hayaa, no respect, no sense of shame or guilt.

Hookah...evil ???

But I thought it was harmless.... .one might say.

Harmless ?

Lets see how "harmless" hookah is. Let the facts speak for themselves.

What science says about hookah?

Mayo Clinic research says: "Although many believe that the water in the hookah filters out all the "bad stuff" in the tobacco smoke, this isn't true.

According to a recent World Health Organization (WHO) advisory, a typical one-hour session of hookah smoking exposes the user to 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke inhaled from a single cigarette.

Even after passing through the water, the tobacco smoke produced still contains high levels of toxic compounds, including carbon monoxide, heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens) .

Hookah smoking also delivers significant levels of nicotine (about 70 times more )— the very addictive substance in tobacco." (Pulmonologist Mayo Clinic Edward Rosenow, M.D., )

"One single session (45-minutes) of Hookah smoking will result in the smoker breathing in 100 times more smoke than regular smoking."(World Health Organization)

“Contrary to what many beginning users may think, hookah tobacco use carries many of the same risks as cigarette smoking, including being linked to lung cancer and other lung diseases.” (John L. Kirkwood, President and CEO of the American Lung Association) .

"Links have been found between water-pipe (hookah) usage andoral, lung and bladder cancer, in addition to heart disease and clogged arteries," (American Lung Association) .

"The water moisture induced by the hookah makes the smoke less irritating and may give a false sense of security and reduce concerns about true health effects." (Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics)

"Water pipes (hookah) smokers were five times more likely than non-smokers to show signs of gum disease. People who smoked water pipes had five times the risk of lung cancer as non-smokers. " (Journal of Periodontology)

The World Health Organization (WHO) regional office in Cairo estimates that 17 percent of

Tuberculosis cases in the eastern Mediterranean are attributable to the smoking of water pipes.

Na'uzubillah! Cancer of the mouth, lung and bladder...tuberculosis, heart disease, lung disease, gum disease....exposure to toxic compounds like heavy metals, nicotine, tar, arsenic....you name it.

Is there any more evidence one needs to know that smoking hookah is bad for you? !!!

What our Shariah says about Hookah?

1. It's harmful to yourself:

All these harmful materials collect in the person's body over time, resulting in a gradual killing of the organs and tissues. These diseases may not appear all at once, but the one who smokes is most likely to suffer from some of them, and his suffering increases as he grows older.

And anything that cause harm to one's body or to others is haram in Islam.

Allah says: "Do not kill yourself. Allah is Merciful unto you." (Surat al-Nisa :29)

29. Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la ta/kuloo amwalakum baynakum bialbatili illa an takoona tijaratan AAan taradin minkum wala taqtuloo anfusakum inna Allaha kana bikum raheeman

29. O ye who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities: But let there be amongst you Traffic and trade by mutual good-will: Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily God hath been to you Most Merciful!

"...make not your own hands contribute to your destruction. .." (Surah al-Baqarah:195)

195. Waanfiqoo fee sabeeli Allahi wala tulqoo bi-aydeekum ila alttahlukati waahsinoo inna Allaha yuhibbu almuhsineena

195. And spend of your substance in the cause of God, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for God loveth those who do good.

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” (Ahmed, Ibn Majah-saheeh by Albaani)

2. It is a poison:

Don't you see that it is a kind of slow poison with which a person kills himself?

The statistics show that over 3 million people worldwide die from smoking-related causes each year.

"Whomsoever consumes poison, thereby killing himself, then he will be consuming his poison forever in the fire of Hell and he will abide in it permanently and eternally." (Bukhaari, Muslim)

It is suicide:

Knowing fully well the harmful effects of hookah, if someone still smokes it, it is suicide.

“Whoever kills himself with something in this world will be punished with it on the Day of Resurrection.” (Bukhaari, Muslim)

It is a waste of money and extravagance:

Extravagance in Islam means spending on something haram.

The money that one spends on hookah is therefore an extravagance.

"… and do not be extravagant wasters. Those who are extravagant are kinsmen of Satan." (Surat al-Israil 17:26-27)

26. Waati tha alqurba haqqahu waalmiskeena waibna alssabeeli wala tubaththir tabtheeran

26. And render to the kindred their due rights, as (also) to those in want, and to the wayfarer: But squander not (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift.

27. Inna almubaththireena kanoo ikhwana alshshayateeni wakana alshshaytanu lirabbihi kafooran

27. Verily spendthrifts are brothers of the Evil Ones; and the Evil One is to his Lord (himself) ungrateful.

You will have to answer to Allaah for this:

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

Your body and life have a right over you:

Allah Subhaanahu wa Taala has given you this life and this body as an Amanah to you. You are supposed to take care of it and protect it from harm and haram.

What will you say to Allah when He asks you about it?

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam)said: "Your body has a right on you."

27. WaAllahu yureedu an yatooba AAalaykum wayureedu allatheena yattabiAAoona alshshahawati an tameeloo maylan AAatheeman

27. God doth wish to Turn to you, but the wish of those who follow their lusts is that ye should turn away (from Him),- far, far away.

"Allaah wants to let you into His Mercy, whereas those who follow the desires want you to drift far away (from the right path)." (Surah an-Nisaa:27)

Don't smoke it and don't let people smoke it:

It is not only haram for someone to smoke hookah himself, rather it is equally haram to offer it to people, to sell it, buy it, or promote it in any way.

"Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment." (Surah Maidah:2)

Do not even sit with those who smoke, even if you don't smoke yourself:

And if you keep company with those who do smoke, even if you yourself don't, or even sit with the people who are smoking it, then you are still counted amongst them.

Allah warns us;
“And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Quran) that when you hear the Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be one of them. Surely, Allah will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell” [al-Nisaa 4:140]

We need to realize that smoking is haram, whether it is hookah, cigarettes or anything else. It is bad, not just for ones health, but also for other worldly matters and much worse for the Akhirah.

It is our duty to educate ourselves, our kids, family, friends and communities about this evil, and teach everyone to stay away from it and to help those addicted to it to get help.

May Allah guide us and enable us to stay on the right path and do only those acts that are pleasing to Him. Ameen.

SMOKING

Definition
Smoking refers to the action of lighting a cigarette, a pipe, a cigar, a water pipe, or any other object made from tobacco or materials of similar effects. The object is then sucked on with the lips to extract smoke. This smoke is inhaled into the chest and then exhaled from the nose and mouth as a thick white smoke. "Smoking" is now used to refer to the action of producing this smoke in English, Arabic, and other languages.

____________ _________ _________ __

Evidence for the Prohibition of Smoking
There are many reasons, any one of which is sufficient to rule smoking to be prohibited. Most importantly, it is harmful in numerous ways. It is harmful to the Deen, health, environment, family, brotherhood and social relations, property, etc. The following sections will briefly outline some of its harms and evils.
____________ _________ _________ __

Haram To The Deen
Smoking spoils a person's acts of worship and reduces their rewards. For instance, it spoils the prayer, which is the pillar of Deen. Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said:Whoever eats garlic or onion, let him avoid us and our masjid, and stay in his home. The angels are surely hurt by things that hurt the human beings(1)

Those with clean and undefiled fitrah (nature) have no doubt that the smell emanating from the mouth of a smoker is worse and more foul than that from the mouth of one who ate garlic or onion. Thus, a smoker is in between two options, either to harm the praying people and the angels with his foul smell, or miss the prayer in jamaah.

Smoking also spoils fasting. Fasting is very hard for the smoker. As soon as the day is over, he hastens to break his fast on an evil cigarette instead of sweet dates or pure water. Even if he fasts through the month Ramadan, a smoker is reluctant to fast on other days. Thus he loses the great reward of those who fast even one day in Allah's way.
____________ _________ _________ __

Harm To The Human Body
No one can deny the harm of smoking to the human body. The medical evidence for this is well established and overwhelming. Because of this, the law in many countries requires including a warning on any smoking advertisement.

Smoking contains poisonous materials, such as nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic, benzopyrene, etc., that the smoker swallows in small proportions. Their harm accumulates with time to result in a gradual killing of the human organs and tissues.

The hazards of smoking to the health are hard to enumerate.
  • Cancer,
  • tuberculosis,
  • heart attacks,
  • asthma,
  • coughing,
  • premature birth,
  • infertility,
  • in the digestive system,
  • high blood pressure,
  • nervousness,
  • mouth and teeth diseases, etc.,
  • are among the many health hazards that have been strongly linked to smoking.
These diseases may not appear all at once, however a smoker is most likely to suffer from some of them, and his suffering increases as he grows older. Furthermore, statistics have established that smokers' age is, on the average, ten years less than other people's.

This is sufficient to prohibit smoking. Islam prohibits any action that causes harm to oneself or to other people.

And the Messenger (pbuh) says: No harm may be inflicted on oneself or others.(4)

The feet of a human being will not depart, on the day of Judgment, from his standing before his Lord, until he is questioned about five things: his lifetime - how did he pass it, his youth - how did he used it, his wealth - where did he earn it and how did he spend it, and how did he follow what he knew?(5)

Whoever consumes poison, killing himself with it, then he will he consuming his poison in the hellfire, and he will abide in it permanently and eternally.(6)
____________ _________ _________ __

Harm To The Mind and Will Power
Smoking is harmful to the human mind and reason. An obvious demonstration of this is that one who is addicted to it passes through periods of severe craving, making it hard for him to think, concentrate, solve a problem, or do any important matter, until he smokes.

When one smokes, his muscles slacken, and he passes through a brief period of delirium that curtails his or her thought. His or her digestive system is also affected, causing him or her frequent nervousness and trembling of the hands. He or she passes through periods of excitability, in agitation, and insomnia.

Thus, instead of being Allah's slave, a smoker becomes slave to his cigarette. He develops a weaker control of his sense and reason. The faculty of reason, clear and unobstructed, is one of Allah's great bounties on people. He (T) praised it in numerous places of the Quran; and He called on people to use it to see the truth and obey Him in a better way. Allah wants of the believer to be strong and capable of controlling the reigns of his desires.

Harm To The Environment
A smoker emits his poisons in the faces of his companions, wife, children, and the environment.

It is well established that second-hand smoke is almost as dangerous as first-hand. Thus, whether they like it or not, a smoker's associates are forced to inhale the smoke and be smokers
themselves as well.

In addition to the poisons normally carried in the smoke, if a smoker has an contagious disease, such as tuberculosis or influenza, his exhaled smoke and coughing carry the disease to those around him.

Furthermore, a smoker irritates people by the foul smell and poisonous nature of his smoking. If they suffer from asthma or allergies, they are forced to move away from his vicinity.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbor.(8)

Thus, smoking constitutes a definite harm to other people; this is prohibited, as was indicated in the hadith cited earlier.

Also, a smoker is certainly a bad companion to sit with, as is depicted in the following hadith:

"Verily, the example of a good companion and a bad one is like that of a perfume merchant and a blacksmith: As for the perfume merchant, he would either grant you (some perfume), or you would buy (some perfume) from him, or (in the least) you would get a good smell from him. And as for the blower of the bellows (ironsmith), you would either get a foul odor from him, or he would burn your clothes."(9)
____________ _________ _________ __

Harm To The Property
A smoker wastes his wealth on that which harms and has no benefit; he will be asked about his wealth and how he spent it, as has been cited in the hadith earlier. His wealth belongs to Allah, so how would he dare to waste it in disobedience to Him?

And the Prophet (pbuh) said: Allah hates for you three things: gossiping, begging, and wasting money.(12)

Furthermore, there are numerous cases of burnt carpets, furniture, and even complete houses and establishments that have resulted from this disastrous vice.

____________ _________ _________ __

Moral Decadence
Smoking is a form of moral decadence. It is most spread among the low-class immoral people. It reflects blind imitation of the non-Muslims. It is mostly consumed in bars, discos, casinos, and other: places of sin.

A smoker may beg or steal if he does not have the money to buy cigarettes. He is ill-mannered with his friends and family, especially when he misses taking his necessary "dose" at the usual time.
____________ _________ _________ __

Evil Substance
Smoking involves the consumption of an evil substance (khabeeth). It has a foul smell, foul taste, and is harmful to the body.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's what the author Asma bint Shameem had to share with us about the dangers of smoking the hookah?
Now, let's take a look at the dangers posed by cigarette smoking!
I wonder as to how many of the smokers out there puffing and smoking away know exactly what it is that they are lighting up and inhaling into their God given lungs and respiratory system?
If you care to take a look and read about the various poisons that make up a stick of cigarette above, then you will know what you are sucking into your precious lungs?
That is if you are a smoker, of course? If you aren't, please stay that way!
Be wise. Cigarette smoking is not nice!
Its foul and hazardous to health, both the smokers and bystanders or those around the smoking fiends.
Personally I find smokers to be quite a nuisance and most smokers here in Malaysia tend to ignore whatever anti smoking campaigns that the Ministry of Health or any Consumer Associations launch every now and then.
Motorists simply chuck their still smoking cigarette butts out through their vehicle windows and don't give a damn about where it lands?
Sometimes those flaming butts end up in the following vehicle and God forbid if it carries combustible liquids or other highly flammable material!
Those still smoking butts are known to have caused brush fires especially when it is the dry season and in some cases caused whole wide areas of dry grassland to erupt into fire and gets fullblown into a raging bonfire.
Do smokers care?
They don't!
Next we have these smokers puffing away like long lost little dragons at kopitiams, mamak shops and bistros, cafes and restaurants as they please.
They do not give a hoot about non smokers around them. They usually flick their cigarette ashes onto the floor and are prone to just squashing their cigarette butts on the floor as well, creating not only a mess but an awful pong as well especially if the said restaurant or eatery's floor is not that dry.
Do smokers care?
You can bet that they don't!
I often see fathers smoking while having their little children with them and at times even those susceptible infants.
Do these wackos even bother that their unfiltered cigarette smoke will poison those young babies of theirs?
Nope. They don't!
All that they care about is to have their nicotine fix no matter what!
Can we conclude that cigarette smokers are committing suicide the slow way?
They don't die right away but over the years slowly but surely turn their once pinkish lungs into something that resembles a burnt piece of meat!
Eventually, each of us will die anyway but do we need to suffer from all the nasty harmful side effects of smoking and choke, croak our precious remaining moments of our life away?
Think of the consequences to both your body, wallet and environment before you next light up your slow way to Hell, right here on Earth itself?
May you be well and healthy.
Ameen.
