Dakwah Walkabouts ~ Facts and Fallacies to be considered.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Prof Dr Nasoha Saabin
Lately this ophthalmologist has been in the news albeit here in the blogosphere for his daring take on the Mursyidul Am @ Spiritual Chief of PAS where he accuses the PAS bigwig of being an ally of the Devil and Dajjal!

Prof Dr Nasoha Saabin doesn't shy away from speaking his mind and claims to be doing what the Blessed Prophet Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam did by calling mankind to Islam?

Whilst the professor may think that he is doing what the Blessed Messenger of Allah did during his lifetime, the differing circumstances and situations of today needs to be taken into consideration by the said doctor!

One can't expect to simply approach a Non Muslim just like that and get the person to simply nod and agree to embrace Islam without question or even have an inkling to what the faith is all about, right on the spot?

Just watch this video:

Islam is embraced with knowledge. It is practiced with belief and studied with reason and logic. There are many today who are Muslims just in name!

If we are to approach and ask them to explain to us about Islam, chances are that they will be squirming and be unable to share more about any basic principle or fundamental subject about the faith?

Those of us who are born into Islam are brought up according to the tenets and principles of our faith. By our own conviction and vocation, we make it a point to understand all that there is to our faith of Al-Islam and we never stop learning about it even to our last moments here on Earth.

To have Prof Dr Nasoha carry out what he is shown doing in the video above tantamounts to imposing the faith of Al Islam unto others without explaining its principles and reasoning with them the Non Muslims as to why they should enter the fold of Islam, Allah's true and only revealed faith to us mankind?

This runs contrary to what Allahu Rabbi commands us to do as per the revelation in Chapter 16 Verse 125 Surah An Nahl in the Blessed Al Quran:

16:125
Transliteration
'Ood 'uu ila sabeeli rabbika bilhikmati walmaw ithatil hasanah* wajadilhum billatee hiya ahsanu* inna rabbaka huwa a'lamu biman dalla 'aan sabeelih* wahuwa a'lamu bilmuhtadeen
Sahih International
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.

We can't simply expect the Non Muslims to drop everything that they hold near and dear and come waltzing into our embrace, can we?

It would be purely coincidental if we come across someone who has been learning about Islam all these while and it so happens that he or she was just waiting for an opportune moment to state their readiness to become a Muslim and voila! this Caller to Islam would think that Hello! This is it! I did right! etc..

For those of us who are living here in Malaysia, we all know of the endless consequences of such sudden conversions, done at the spur of the moment by those who then choose to keep their conversions to Islam a secret from their families and loved ones.

Every now and then, we'll hear of the tussle for a deceased revert to Islam's remains between the family of the disputed convert to Islam and the Islamic religious department's officials.

All because the deceased chose to hide his or her conversion to Islam from family and friends for fear of the resulting repercussions and ensuing ostracization. This is a fact and we all know it happens here in Malaysia without fail.

There are only a few reverts to Islam who have publicly announced their conversion to Islam and survived without any dire consequences to their personal safety. Some unfortunately have been killed by their family members and other hired assassins.

I am not saying that Prof Dr Nasoha is totally wrong in his approach. Only that he can't simply conclude that he has done his part and fulfilled his obligations as a Da'ee @ Caller to Islam.

It's not enough. There must be an initial approach. Get to know one's intended target for Dakwah. Get to learn more about the individual and his or her situation and understanding of the Islamic faith. We have to study more about the person.

We can't simply approach anyone, tell them about this and that and then pose the question to them,'Do you want to be a Muslim?' and if the person says no, then say that you have done your duty as a Muslim and then leave them just like that!

What kind of Dakwah is that?

There must be a standard acceptable system of approaching those who have yet to know anything about Islam. There must be an initial breaking the ice effort so to speak? Get to know them in person.

Give them some basic information about Islam first like in the form of pamphlets, booklets or even an informational DVD if you can afford to do so where they can study about the faith and let them have a follow up contact card or email address to which they can forward to you their questions if they wish?
Sharing of brochures and pamphlets on Islam
Find out more about them. Ask them whether they have any prior knowledge of what Islam is all about and whether they have any questions about it? Get them to ask the Caller about any issues or matters concerning Islam and the Muslims that they have had in their heart all this while but didn't know whom to ask about it?

Once you as the Caller to Islam have answered their questions accurately in a manner that is full of wisdom and based upon the facts, only then should one proceed further and ask whether he or she would like to learn more about Islam?

Not just come up to someone as what Prof Dr Nasoha is shown doing ; then pop the question 'Do you want to be a Muslim?' expect the person to give you a 'Yes' or 'No' answer there and then and if in the negative, make a right about turn and leave the fellow with a simple 'Thank you!' and 'Goodbye!'

What half baked kind of Da'ee is that?

We need to do more. Spend more time with them. Not a 'Wham! Bam! Thank you Ma'am' style of hit and run Dakwah walkabout! No sirree! That kind of approach just won't do.

The intention might be good but the methodology is so full of holes that you'd just tire yourself needlessly with no results of success in bringing anyone into Islam or just end up confusing some poor sod who happens to be caught in your way?

Was that your objective?

I sure hope it's not. Do not by your inexperience end up causing more harm to the good name of Al-Islam! Na'uzubillahiminzalik!

May Allah forbid!

We want to attract more of our Non Muslim brethren to Islam ; not scare them away with our rough shod tactics or wrong approach!

I sincerely appeal to those of you who so desire to call others to Islam, to please equip yourselves with adequate and ample knowledge of Islam in the first place and learn to master the art of Calling to the Truth!

Learn to capture the heart and minds of those whom you have identified as worth approaching and do so in a manner as worthy of yourself addressing your person as a Da'ee of Ar Rahman. Insya Allah!

May Allah bless each and every one of you who has undertaken to carry on with the noble mission of inviting others to Allah's Way.

Ameen.

Wabillahi Taufik Wal Hidayah.
